Postcards Suck

by emily on August 27, 2012

Have you checked out the Stand Out From the Crowd video series yet? No??? Check them out while they are still available. You’ll learn about the number one marketing tool available to actors (that no one ever tells them about) plus find out if the SOFTC program is right for you.

These videos won’t be available forever, so make some time today to check them out:

August is an exciting time of year – there is that back-to-school energy, a sense of purpose, and a renewed commitment to making BIG things happen.

And if you’re ready to make things happen in your acting career, I think it’s time for a serious heart to heart.

Now you know how imperative I think marketing is to your acting success.

And because I am so passionate about teaching you – not just how to market yourself – but how to market yourself effectively – I have to let you in on a little secret that no one in the industry really talks about…

Postcards suck.

I know it’s hard to hear, but it’s true. If you want to make BIG things happen in your career, sending postcards just isn’t going to cut it.

Sure, postcards are a useful tool for relationship maintenance with people who already know you.

But if you can’t seem to break through to a new career level, that monthly postcard update is never going to give you the momentum you need to get there.

Why postcards suck

  • They are limited in their scope (ie – you can only create one relationship per postcard)
  • Half the time they get thrown in the trash without being looked at
  • There’s no tangible result – you put in all this effort and rarely know what (if any) result comes from it
  • Everyone uses them – it’s impossible to stand out

Here’s the thing – for BIG things to happen, BIG actions must be taken. And postcard marketing is simply too small to make a big
splash.

How are you supposed to stand out?

Well, you could cross your fingers and hope a big job comes your way. (Let me know how it goes)

You could stay home and visualize being discovered. (Good luck with that strategy)

Or, you could take serious action to make something happen. (This is the way to go!)

What might this action be?

If you’ve been following last week’s stand out from the crowd videos – you already know what I’m going to say.

It is one of the best, insider, not-talked-about strategies to giving your career a serious boost.

Want to know what it is?

It’s media coverage.

Why media coverage works

  • You get instant credibility
  • Tons of exposure (this beats the “one relationship at a time” snail’s pace of postcards)
  • The most powerful tool of all – interest in YOU

Think about it. Right now, you are probably the one who is always asking for things – auditions, meetings, opportunities, anything you can get!

Someone else has something you want, and you can end up feeling like a beggar always trying to get it.

It gets exhausting.

On the other hand – landing a little bit of media coverage can turn your entire marketing strategy on its head.

When someone else takes the time to write about you (like a journalist, editor or reporter), you are instantly perceived as newsworthy by the entertainment industry. Even if nothing about your career has changed!

This new credibility can help increase interest in you (and this is the most powerful tool of all).

Let’s say a producer reads your media coverage and has a project they are working on that you would be perfect for.  Because they liked your article, they pick up the phone to set a meeting with you. Next thing you know, you’ve got an amazing professional connection with someone who you never even knew existed before. And the best part is, THEY requested to build the relationship with YOU – not the other way around.

This is exactly the kind of result that can happen from a little bit of media coverage.

When an inudstry professional initiates a relationship with you, it is a relationship of a whole different kind. Suddenly it’s a
meeting of equals, instead of feeling like THEM (with all the power) and little old YOU, begging for the scraps.

And this kind of thing will never go down by sending a postcard.  It just isn’t enough ju-ju to make you stand out.

So. You may be thinking to yourself, “Ok, I understand the value of media coverage – but I don’t have anything to say.
There’s no way I’m press worthy.”

And to that I say – stick with me.

The stand out from the crowd program was designed with you in mind. I’ve landed media coverage for myself, and
helped a handful of my clients pitch themselves. In every case, we each had our media coverage picked up.

So if your postcard strategy hasn’t paid off for you, perhaps it’s time to try something new; something to make a bigger splash.
