The truth about success

by emily on August 19, 2014

When actors come to me for help with career plan, they expect a marketing plan. A step by step list of tangible things they can do to get what they want.

And I deliver that.

But here’s the truth.  Client’s don’t really come to me because they need a plan.

Not that the plan isn’t pretty great, if I do say so myself.

But the plan isn’t the issue.

In fact, I could create the most masterful, mind-blowing, acting-success plan in the world, and still watch it fail miserably in the hands of someone who skips over the most important thing you need to be a success.

There are two things actually.

The most important steps that lead to success are:

Inner work and accountability.

Without both of these, success will remain elusive.

I’m not good enough.  Marketing is pushy.  I don’t have enough credits.  I’m not right for this part.  I’m too old, young, fat, skinny, shy.

The beliefs you have are powerful.  Especially those unconscious limiting beliefs you aren’t even aware are kicking around in that pretty little head of yours.

Beliefs are ideas that we have decided we agree with.  And we behave according to our beliefs.  The thing is, intellectual understanding is not enough to overcome a deep seated belief.  The subconscious mind is far more powerful than the conscious mind.

When you don’t bring conscious awareness to the thoughts that are running your life, you don’t have a say in your choices.  You’re just running on auto pilot.

The most important work I do with my clients (and on myself) is the inner work.  Uncovering those limiting beliefs is a life long process.  They have a way of sneaking back in there when you’re not looking.  When you bring conscious awareness to the thoughts and ideas that hold you back, you get a gift.  A tiny gap between having the thought and acting on it (or in other cases, not taking action).  That tiny gap of time comes in the form of awareness.  When you bring awareness to the table, you return to the power of choice.

You can’t change the things you aren’t aware of.  When you do become aware, you have the freedom to choose what is in alignment with your highest good.

Success is a process

successprocessBig success is the result of small actions taken over the long term.  It starts with clarity of what you want.  Once you know that, it’s about doing something every day in the direction of your goals.

It is the opposite of the stop-and-start cycle of taking action which goes something like this:

You haven’t done anything toward your goal(s) in a while.  You start to feel behind schedule so you decide to play catch up.  In a panic, you push yourself to achieve big things in a short amount of time.  As you take action (and because you’re already working with an unrealistic to do list), you become frustrated and disheartened because you’re not meeting your goals.  You start to get tired and worn out, and soon enough, you stop taking action altogether.

Rinse and repeat.

In some cases, big success can happen right out of the gate, seemingly out of nowhere.  Whether that is the case, or just appears to be the case from the outside, sustainable success can only come from the process of small daily actions.

Accountability or bustaccountability

To successfully stay on the path of small daily actions in the direction of your goals takes accountability.  Plain and simple.

I don’t know about you, but when left to my own devices, I am a master procrastinator.  If it weren’t for accountability or deadlines, I would never get anything done.  Structure and deadlines serve me very well, and I create the same environment for my clients to stay on track.

There are very few people who can keep themselves accountable all (or even most) of the time.  So if you aren’t able to do this for yourself, don’t sweat it.  You’re in good company!

Just be sure you put a system of accountability in place (that actually works) to help you stay on track (ahem…I can help you with that).

The smart actor trap

The smart actor trap is when you know what to do, but you aren’t doing it.  That’s a problem!

Knowing is not enough.  Knowledge is only power if you act upon it.  In fact, without implementation, knowledge is useless.

It’s not enough to KNOW about this stuff.  Logical understanding doesn’t count.  You must implement and take action.  Otherwise, your knowledge cannot serve you.

When the magic happens

Have you ever had an amazing opportunity fall out of the sky?  Been at the right place at the right time?  The thing is, when you focus on doing the inner work and taking daily action in the direction of your goals, that is when the magic happens.

That is when you experience serendipity.  When opportunities come knocking.  When the planets seem to align to support your dreams coming true.

When you put these simple tools into practice, you create a success momentum that catapults you to new heights of success.

It’s not glamorous, or a magic pill, but it works!
